Medical marijuana is now a $1.7-billion market in the U.S. This means that sales of medical marijuana rival the annual revenue generated by Viagra, a $1.9-billion business.

What's more, the medical marijuana market is expected to nearly double in the next five years, and that's just in the 15 U.S. states where the drug is legal. If another 20 states pass medical marijuana laws, which projections show is possible, the market could grow to $8.9 billion by 2016.

According to MSNBC:

"The cannabis industry as a whole -- including the underground black market and medical gray market -- generates anywhere from $18 billion to $35.8 billion a year."

In the video above, "Run From the Cure – the Rick Simpson Story," it's suggested that pharmaceutical companies and big business may be withholding a potential cancer cure -- hemp oil -- from the public in the interest of personal profit.

"...perfectly balanced 1:3 ratio of naturally-occurring omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids...unlike other seeds and nutritional oils, such as flax and fish fish oil, hemp seeds also contain super omega-3 stearidonic acid and super omega-6-gamma-linolenic acid in nutritionally relevant amounts that help to reduce inflammation and improve mental functioning, as well as make up for potentially impaired fatty acid metabolism."

They also noted that the reason why industrial hemp cannot be grown in the United States is because the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) refuses to acknowledge that hemp is not the same as marijuana. As TreeHugger reported:

"The United States is the only industrialized nation where growing industrial hemp is illegal. And because of that we're missing out on huge economic opportunity...

Apparently even though Canadian cops can tell the difference between high-THC cannabis plants (marijuana) and low-THC plants (industrial hemp), the US DEA can't be bothered."

Cannabis, or as it's more commonly known marijuana, has been used for its medicinal properties for thousands of years. It's been heralded as a "cure-all," revered for its healing properties that not only help relieve pain but also have been highlighted as a potential cancer cure.

Hemp Vs. Marijuana: What's the Difference?

Before I delve into the intriguing controversy surrounding medical marijuana, it's important to note that the plants referred to as hemp and marijuana are not the same. Both are members of the Cannabis sativa plant species, but they are two distinct varieties.

Marijuana typically is high in THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) -- the compound responsible for the plant's notorious psychoactive effect -- and low in CBD (cannabidiol) content. Both THC and CBD are known as cannabinoids, which interact with your body in a unique way I'll describe later.

What's interesting, however, is that CBD has been shown to block the effect of THC in the nervous system. So, marijuana plants are typically high in THC and low in CBD, which maximizes their psychoactive effects.

Hemp, on the other hand, is typically high in CBD and low in THC, as it is bred to maximize its fiber, seeds and oil, the items for which it is most commonly used. Why is it "Illegal" to Grow Hemp in the United States?

Ironically, despite their differences, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) classifies all C. sativa varieties as "marijuana," according to NAIHC.

This is why the United States is the only industrialized nation where growing industrial hemp is illegal. Well, technically it is not illegal, but growing it requires a permit from the DEA – and it is reportedly almost impossible to get one.

This is a shame for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Hemp is healthy: Hemp seeds pack a powerful nutritional punch. Two tablespoons of shelled hemp seeds contain about 11 grams of protein and 2 grams of unsaturated omega-3 fatty acids. And, as TreeHugger reported, hemp seeds have a " "perfectly balanced 1:3 ratio of naturally-occurring omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids...unlike other seeds and nutritional oils, such as flax..."

  • Hemp is good for the economy: The total retail value of North American hemp products was valued at around $400 million in 2009, but U.S. farmers are unable to benefit from this since hemp products are imported.

No matter what you call it, cannabis and its range of varieties, including marijuana, is said to be among the safest medicinal substances known, and there are nearly 25 million Americans who have health conditions that medical marijuana could reportedly treat (and this figure only includes those living in states where its use is currently legal), according to The State of the Medical Marijuana Markets 2011-- yet fewer than 800,000 are taking part.

If marijuana is, in fact, capable of helping heal millions with very few, to no, side effects, why is this not being shouted from the rooftops?

Political Agendas and Red Tape Make Medical Marijuana a Nightmare

Marijuana was a popular botanical medicine in the 19th and 20th centuries, common in U.S. pharmacies of the time. Yet, in 1970, the herb was declared a Schedule 1 controlled substance, labeling it a drug with a "high potential for abuse" and "no accepted medical use."

Three years later the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) was formed to enforce the newly created drug schedules, and the fight against marijuana use began.

The battle that has raged since is a long one, and you can read a brief history of marijuana prohibition in the Huffington Post -- but suffice to say that movements to legalize marijuana have persisted ever since. The most successful to date, and the one that is set to produce the first legal marijuana market in decades, is the medical marijuana movement.

As the State of the Medical Marijuana Markets' executive summary states:

"Since 1996, marijuana proponents have pushed for individual states to recognize marijuana as a treatment for a range of illnesses. New medical research and changing public opinion have propelled these efforts.

Over the past 15 years, led by California, 15 states plus the District of Columbia have adopted laws permitting some form of marijuana consumption or distribution for medical use. These laws have been adopted by public referendums as well as legislation."

Despite its legal status, it was common for the DEA to raid medical marijuana suppliers and even arrest patients, up until 2009 when the U.S. Justice Department essentially told federal prosecutors to lay off Americans producing and using medical marijuana in accordance with state laws.

Now in 2011, the report notes that a national market for medical marijuana is worth $1.7 billion -- and could grow to nearly $9 billion in the next five years. Investors are sitting on the sidelines, just waiting for the regulatory smoke to clear.

Many patients, too, are eager to get their hands on what some are calling the "cancer answer."

Are You Being Kept in the Dark About a Potential Cancer Cure?

If you ask Canadian Rick Simpson, absolutely.

Simpson is the man in the video above who was openly growing hemp in his backyard and using it to produce hemp oil, which he gave, for free, to his friends and family. The oil, Simpson and many others claim, has a remarkable healing effect on countless diseases and conditions, including cancer.

After numerous raids by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Simpson was forced to seek asylum in another country, but his Web site,Phoenix Tears, still stands. There you can find instructions on how to produce hemp oil, as well as testimonials from people who say the oil has helped them. Mail Online also featured a story of 2-year-old Cash Hyde who was diagnosed with a serious brain tumor. His father secretly administered cannabis oil through his son's feeding tube while he was in the hospital in failing health and the boy experienced a complete turnaround. He has now been declared cancer free.

As Simpson states:

"I have been providing people with instructions on how to make Hemp Oil medicines for about 8 years. The results have been nothing short of amazing. Throughout man's history hemp has always been known as the most medicinal plant in the world. Even with this knowledge hemp has always been used as a political and religious football.

The current restrictions against hemp were put in place and maintained, not because hemp is evil or harmful, but for big money to make more big money, while we suffer and die needlessly.

Look at a proposal such as this; if we were allowed to grow hemp in our back yards and cure our own illnesses, what do you think the reaction of the pharmaceutical industry would be to such a plan?

Many large pharmaceutical companies that still exist today sold hemp based medicines in the 1800's and early 1900's. They knew then what I have recently found out. Hemp oil if produced properly is a cure-all that the pharmaceutical industry can't patent."

National Cancer Institute Changes Web Site about Cannabis' "Anti-Tumor Effect"

In March 2011, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) updated its Web site to include some of the benefits of medical marijuana, reportedly noting:

"The potential benefits of medicinal Cannabis for people living with cancer include antiemetic effects, appetite stimulation, pain relief, and improved sleep. In the practice of integrative oncology, the health care provider may recommend medicinal Cannabis not only for symptom management but also for its possible direct antitumor effect."

Being the first federal agency to publicly claim that marijuana may in fact be beneficial -- and possess anti-tumor properties -- it generated significant buzz on the Web. But soon after, NCI quickly changed its tune, editing the anti-tumor reference entirely out of its statement, which now reads:

"The potential benefits of medicinal Cannabis for people living with cancer include antiemetic effects, appetite stimulation, pain relief, and improved sleep. Though no relevant surveys of practice patterns exist, it appears that physicians caring for cancer patients who prescribe medicinal Cannabis predominantly do so for symptom management."

NCI then tried to account for its changes by posting this explanation on March 30:

"In light of the attention garnered by the PDQ summary statement on Cannabis and cannabinoids, reviewers for the summary on the PDQ Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Editorial Board reexamined the recently posted statement and decided to change the wording, in order to clarify the meaning that the Board originally intended to convey and to correct several possible misinterpretations."

It's a suspicious swap of wording, to say the least, but even more perplexing is why, if anti-tumor effects have been discovered from cannabis -- and they have -- why is this substance not the subject of major research studies?

Why are Medical Marijuana and Hemp Oil NOT Being Studied?

Even a quick review of the data suggests that cannabis deserves more than a passing glance as a potential treatment for various diseases. But in the United States, these studies are not being done.

According to a report by Americans for Safe Access:

"In the past three decades, there has been an explosion of international studies designed to investigate the therapeutic value of cannabis (marijuana).

However, drastic restrictions on research in the U.S. have meant that few clinical trials are being conducted domestically and none are being conducted as part of a sponsor-funded drug development plan aimed at obtaining Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approval for the prescription use of the botanical plant itself.

Meanwhile, research teams in Great Britain, Spain, Italy, Israel, and elsewhere have confirmed - through case studies, basic research, pre-clinical, and preliminary clinical investigations - the medical value of cannabis ... "

It is easy to see why drug companies would want no part in funding research studies on a plant that can't be patented. If they were to discover that it could cure cancer, patients would be able to grow it themselves right in their own backyard ... this is not something the pharmaceutical companies would want you to know about.

Simpson, who keep in mind has been giving away hemp oil for free, is so convinced of its usefulness that he states on his Web site:

"When the hemp plant is grown for medicinal use, you now have your own medical system that is much safer and effective than anything our current medical system provides. You still may require a doctor to set your broken leg, but you will no longer need the chemicals they have been pushing upon us. Hemp is medicine for the masses and no one has the right to control its use."

Of course, in the United States its use is controlled and even those who have a legitimate medical need can have a hard time getting a steady supply. This may change if more research continues to bear out marijuana's healing properties, but for now even the ability to research the substance is tightly controlled. As the Safe Access report states:

" ... the federal monopoly on the supply of cannabis has fundamentally limited FDA-approved clinical research to investigate its safety and efficacy in controlling symptoms of serious and chronic illnesses.

In the United States, research is stalled, and in some cases blocked, by a complicated federal approval process, restricted access to research-grade cannabis, and the refusal of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to license private production of cannabis for use exclusively in federally approved research."

This certainly does make the fervent war to keep marijuana out of the hands of Americans take on new meaning ...

How Cannabis Works: Cannabinoids and the Cannabinoid Receptor System

There are more than 60 chemical compounds known as cannabinoids in the marijuana plant. A report by Dr. Manuel Guzman suggests that these active components of cannabis and their derivatives are potential anti-cancer agents. He wrote in the journal Nature Reviews:

" ... these compounds [cannabinoids] have been shown to inhibit the growth of tumour cells in culture and animal models by modulating key cell-signaling pathways. Cannabinoids are usually well tolerated, and do not produce the generalized toxic effects of conventional chemotherapies."

Cannabinoids interact with your body by way of naturally occurring cannabinoid receptors embedded in cell membranes throughout your body. There are cannabinoid receptors in your brain, lungs, liver, kidneys, immune system and more; the therapeutic (and psychoactive) properties of marijuana occur when a cannabinoid (such as the THC produced by the cannabis plant) activates a cannabinoid receptor.

Your body also has naturally occurring endocannabinoids similar to THC that stimulate your cannabinoid receptors and produce a variety of important physiologic processes.

So your body is actually hard-wired to respond to cannabinoids through this unique cannabinoid receptor system; research is ongoing on just how far its impact on your health reaches, but to date it's known that cannabinoid receptors play an important role in many body processes, including metabolic regulation, cravings, pain, anxiety, bone growth, and immune function.

What Does the Research Say About Medical Marijuana?

The studies that have been conducted so far show some promise for the use of cannabis in the treatment of a wide range of health conditions, including potentially cancer. For instance, in 2009 a study in the journal Cancer Prevention Research found that marijuana smokers have a lower risk of head and neck cancers than non-marijuana smokers.

Harvard researchers also found that THC in marijuana cuts tumor growth in lung cancer while significantly reducing its ability to spread.

There is also a wealth of research linking marijuana with pain relief and improved sleep. In one recent study, just three puffs of marijuana a day for five days helped those with chronic nerve pain to relieve pain and sleep better.

Americans for Safe Access also has links to research studies suggesting that cannabis may help in the treatment or prevention of Alzheimer's disease and cancer, while the International Association for Cannabis as Medicine highlights the following medical uses:

Marijuana is NOT Harmless ...

There are certainly some downsides to marijuana use that need to be addressed, particularly if you are thinking of smoking it for recreational purposes.

Marijuana use can be addicting, and no doubt families have been broken up and jobs lost over its use. In the short-term, marijuana use can cause trouble with your ability to think clearly and may impair short-term memory. Marijuana also leads to motor skill impairment and affects alertness, coordination and reaction time, which is why it should never be used prior to driving.

There is also some evidence that marijuana use can exacerbate psychotic symptoms in those with schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders.

It's also been suggested that marijuana use can serve as a "gateway" drug that eventually leads to the use of "harder" drugs like cocaine and heroine, although this has been debated. Marijuana use among children and teens can also have dire consequences, as drug use of any kind may encourage risky choices and irresponsible behaviors.

Practical Considerations on Using Marijuana

While the vast majority of marijuana use is through burning and inhalation, it is worth noting that anytime you heat materials and inhale them you run the risk of introducing toxic elements into your system. This is very similar to using tobacco. Like tobacco it is best to only use organic versions. Any pesticides that are on the material that is burned and inhaled will dramatically increase its toxicity.

Smoking marijuana will also produce carbon monoxide and tar as byproducts of combustion. Additionally, smoking marijuana from a bong (or waterpipe) has been linked to the spread of tuberculosis.

It is possible to avoid these risks entirely by either securing cannabis in hemp oil form or, as many medical marijuana patients do, using a vaporizer. The device vaporizes marijuana without any of the combustion byproducts, allowing for a clean route of ingestion.

It is certainly ironic that a natural substance like marijuana is illegal while prescription drugs that are prescribed by doctors every day kill over 100,000 Americans a year and get the government's gold seal of approval. But you never could grow a drug like Lipitor, Avandia, or Ritalin in your backyard the way you could marijuana ... and perhaps therein lies the problem.

If one chooses to use marijuana, from a health perspective it would seem the safest way to use it would be to eat it (along with some fat, as THC is fat-soluble and will not dissolve in water). It is important to understand though that for nearly everyone in most countries, primarily for political reasons, using marijuana is an illegal activity that could result in serious legal consequences.

(NaturalNews) The nation's largest physician organization, the American Medical Association, has reversed its position on marijuana and now supports investigation and clinical research on the plant for medicinal use. The group urged the federal government on Tuesday to reassess its Schedule I controlled substance categorization of marijuana that wrongly vilifies it with some of the most dangerous narcotics in existence like heroin and LSD.

Dr. Edward Langston, an AMA board member, points out that only a minimal number of randomized, controlled trials have ever been conducted on smoked marijuana despite clinical research that spans more than 30 years. The group is now encouraging further research into marijuana's efficacy despite its support since 1997 for Schedule I classification of the plant.

The Obama administration also this year ordered federal narcotics agents to cease prosecution of medical-marijuana users in states that allow for its usage, indicating a change of course from previous administrations' strict opposition to usage and enforcement of violations, even in legal states. Currently thirteen states legally allow the usage of medicinal marijuana and another twelve or so have begun to consider allowing it.

The AMA is interested in research that considers alternative delivery methods for marijuana aside from smoking it therapeutically. Advocates for medicinal marijuana cite other useful ways of utilizing the plant medicinally, including the extraction of tetrahydrocannabinol(THC)-rich hemp oil that some claim is capable of curing cancer.

Federal government reaction to the AMA's position has been largely silent despite relaxed federal enforcement of marijuana usage. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) reiterated marijuana's status as a Schedule I drug and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) declined to comment on the development.

The AMA was one of the only organizations to oppose the first federal restrictions on marijuana that were enacted in 1937; it continues to reject the arbitrary notion that marijuana serves no medicinal purpose, despite its past support of classification as a Schedule I narcotic. The group even opposed a proposed amendment that would have established its organizational policies in opposition to smoked marijuana as a safe delivery method for medicinal therapy.

Marijuana advocacy groups are ecstatic about the AMA's new position and the widespread shift in attitude towards medicinal marijuana. While federal policy still opposes the legalization of marijuana, citing the FDA judgment in opposition to its safe usage as medicine, popular opinion continues to sway in favor of continued research and medicinal usage.

The American College of Physicians, the second-largest physician group, last year expressed similar support for increased research and reconsideration of medicinal marijuana. The California Medical Association also passed its own resolutions that articulated the criminalization of marijuana as a "failed public health policy".

The tides are shifting towards honest inquiry into the health benefits of marijuana. The beckoning for further evidence-based research by reputable medical organizations is a step in the right direction towards legalizing marijuana for safe, legitimate medical purposes.

Researchers at the University of Reading have discovered that three compounds found in cannabis leaves can help to reduce and control seizures in epilepsy.

They are now using extracts from the plants grown in huge industrial-sized greenhouses in the south of England to develop new drugs that could ease the misery of millions of epilepsy sufferers around the world. In the UK alone there are more than 500,000 people who suffer from epilepsy.

Dr Ben Whalley, who is leading the research at the department of pharmacy at the University of Reading, said tests in animals had shown the compounds effective at preventing seizures and convulsions while also having less side effects than existing epilepsy drugs.

He said: "There was a stigma associated with cannabis that came out from the 60s and 70s associated with recreational use, so people have tended not to look at it medicinally as a result.

"Cannabis is thought of being a treasure trove of compounds that could be used for pharmacological development. We have a list of around a dozen potential candidates for epilepsy and have tested three that show promise.

"These compounds are very well tolerated and you are not seeing the same kind of side effects that you get with the existing treatments."

Epilepsy is caused by sudden bursts of electrical activity in the brain that disrupt the normal way in which messages are transmitted. This can cause debilitating seizures and fits that can lead to sufferers injuring themselves.

Dr Whalley, together with his colleagues Dr Claire Williams and Dr Gary Stephens have been working with drug company GW Pharmaceuticals to develop and test new treatments for the disease from cannabis.

Two of the compounds they have identified, one called cannabidiol and the other called GWP42006, have been highly effective at controlling seizures in animals and the researchers now hope to begin clinical trials in humans within the next three years.

Neither of the compounds produce the characteristic "high" associated with cannabis use.

The scientists, whose latest findings on the compounds are published in the scientific journal Seizure, believe they work by interfering with the signals that cause the brain to become hyper-excitable, which leads to epileptic seizures.

Until now the main medicinal use that has been explored for cannabis has been in treating Multiple Sclerosis and for pain relief in cancer patients.

GW Pharmaceuticals has been given a license to grows around 20 tonnes of cannabis a year at its facilities in a rural part of southern England for medicinal research. In each glasshouse the temperature is carefully maintained at 77 degrees F while the crops are protected by electric fences and 24 hour security.

Mark Rogerson, from GW Pharmaceuticals, said: "Medicinal cannabinoids can treat a wide range of diseases like MS and pain.

"The work by Dr Whalley and his team is taking us into a whole new area where there is a real unmet need.

"The stigma is counterbalanced by the fact that it is a serious medicine for a serious condition."

A spokesman for Epilepsy Action said: "Epilepsy is a condition that can be very difficult to treat.

"We are aware of some people with epilepsy who have used cannabis for medicinal purposes. However, it should be noted that although taking cannabis may reduce seizures in some people, it could actually increase seizures in others.

"We therefore welcome research into this treatment area. It could help our understanding of alternative therapies and may prove useful in the long-term for people whose epilepsy does not respond to more traditional methods."

raises significant concerns for researchers, physicians, and patients. As such, the
College's policy positions on marijuana as medicine are as follows:
Position 1: ACP supports programs and funding for rigorous scientific
evaluation of the potential therapeutic benefits of medical marijuana
and the publication of such findings.
Position 1a: ACP supports increased research for conditions
where the efficacy of marijuana has been established to determine
optimal dosage and route of delivery.
Position 1b: Medical marijuana research should not only focus on
determining drug efficacy and safety but also on determining
efficacy in comparison with other available treatments.
Position 2: ACP encourages the use of nonsmoked forms of THC that
have proven therapeutic value.
Position 3: ACP supports the current process for obtaining federal
research-grade cannabis.
Position 4 (see Addendum): ACP urges an evidence-based review of
marijuana's status as a Schedule I controlled substance to determine
whether it should be reclassified to a different schedule. This review
should consider the scientific findings regarding marijuana's safety
and efficacy in some clinical conditions as well as evidence on the
health risks associated with marijuana consumption, particularly in its
crude smoked form.
Position 5: ACP strongly supports exemption from federal criminal
prosecution; civil liability; or professional sanctioning, such as loss of
licensure or credentialing, for physicians who prescribe or dispense
medical marijuana in accordance with state law. Similarly, ACP
strongly urges protection from criminal or civil penalties for patients
who use medical marijuana as permitted under state laws.
Supporting Research into the Therapeutic Role of Marijuana
The marijuana plant, cannabis, contains more than 60 chemical compounds,
known as cannabinoids. The main psychoactive element in marijuana is delta-
9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Cannabidiol (CBD) is the second most abundant
cannabinoid, but it has no psychoactive effects. The concentration of
THC and other cannabinoids in marijuana is highly variable, depending on
growing condition, plant genetics, and processing after harvest (1). This
variability in composition has hindered research on and evaluation of the drug's
medical value.
Marijuana has been smoked for its medicinal properties for centuries. It was
in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia until 1942 when it was removed because federal
legislation made the drug illegal (2). The Controlled Substance Act of 1970
placed marijuana in the Schedule I category along with other substances
deemed to have no medicinal value and high potential for abuse. Still, the
overwhelming number of anecdotal reports on the therapeutic properties of
marijuana sparks interest from scientists, health care providers, and patients.
Over the past 20 years, researchers have discovered cannabinoid receptors:
CB1, which mediates the central nervous system (CNS), and CB2, which occurs
outside the CNS and is believed to have anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive
activity (3, 4). These scientific developments have revealed much
information supporting expansion of research into the potential therapeutic
properties of marijuana and its cannabinoids.
In 1997, the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy asked
the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to review scientific evidence and assess the risks
and benefits of marijuana. The IOM concluded that scientific developments
indicate marijuana and its cannabinoids have therapeutic properties that could
potentially treat many illnesses and conditions. The IOM recommended that
cannabis research should focus on the development of rapid-onset, reliable,
and safe delivery systems (5). Since the IOM report, the body of research on
cannabinoids for symptom management has grown slightly.
Potential Medical Uses of Marijuana
Appetite Stimulation/Antiemetic
The research supporting THC as an effective appetite stimulant and antiemetic
is abundant. In 1986, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Marinol®
(dronabinol), an oral synthetic form of THC, to treat severe weight loss associated
with AIDS (HIV/AIDS wasting) and nausea and vomiting associated with
chemotherapy for patients who fail to respond to other antiemetics. Clinical trials
have demonstrated that both oral and smoked marijuana stimulate appetite,
increase caloric intake, and result in weight gain among patients experiencing
HIV wasting (6–9). Studies of chemo-therapy patients with nausea and vomiting
found THC to be equivalent or superior to other antiemetics (including prochlorperazine
or metoclopramide) for symptom reduction (10). Research has also
found that administration of THC along with another antiemetic was more
effective that either drug alone, suggesting opportunities for combined therapy.
The IOM concluded that cannabinoids are "modest" antiemetics but may be
effective for those who respond poorly to other available antiemetics. THC and
other cannabinoids may offer relief not found in other drugs (11).
Supporting Research into the Therapeutic Role of Marijuana

High intraocular pressure (IOP) is a known risk factor for glaucoma.
Cannabinoids have been shown to have neuroprotective properties and to
reduce IOP, pupil restriction, and conjunctival hyperemia (12–14). Smoked
or eaten marijuana and oral THC can reduce IOP by approximately 25% in
people with normal IOP who have visual field changes, with similar results
exhibited in healthy adults and glaucoma patients. However, the effects of
cannabinoids on IOP are short-lived, and high doses are required to produce
any effects at all. There is concern that long-term use of marijuana could reduce
blood flow to the optic nerve because of its systemic hypotensive effects and its
potential for interaction with other antiglaucoma drugs (15). In addition, the
cardiovascular and psychoactive effects of smoked marijuana contraindicate its
use in glaucoma patients, many of whom are elderly and have comorbidities.
This led to the development and testing of a topical THC, but its effect on IOP
was insignificant. As a result, the IOM and American Academy of
Ophthalmology concluded that no scientific evidence has demonstrated
increased benefits or diminished risks of marijuana use to treat glaucoma compared
with the wide variety of pharmaceutical agents currently available
(16, 17).
Neurological and Movement Disorders
Anecdotal, survey, and clinical trial data suggest that smoked marijuana and
oral THC provide relief of spasticity, pain, and tremor in some patients with
multiple sclerosis (MS), spinal cord injuries, or other trauma
(18, 19). A recent
study of patients with HIV-associated sensory neuropathy (HIV–SN) found that
those who smoked marijuana 3 times a day reported a decrease of 34% in
HIV–SN, compared with 17% in the placebo group. However, the psychoactive
effects of THC impaired posture and balance among subjects (20). CBD
has some anti-inflammatory properties and inhibits smooth muscle contractions,
thus making it a potentially powerful anticonvulsant that does not contain the
psychoactive effects of THC. CBD has been indicated as a treatment for several
types of seizures and epilepsy, although human research is scant. Preclinical trials
revealed that the anticonvulsant properties of canna-binoids differ widely by
dose and between species. CBD has been shown to induce seizures in some
species and to be strongly anticonvulsant in others (21).

(NaturalNews) In February 2000 researchers in Madrid announced they had destroyed incurable brain tumors in rats by injecting them with THC, the active ingredient in cannabis. The study was later published in the journal Nature Cancer Review. Chances are that you have never heard of this study, the same as you likely never heard of a previous similar study. There has been a virtual news blackout as well as a concerted government effort to suppress such stories and studies for over thirty years.

The study by Manuel Guzman of Madrid Spain found that cannabinoids, the active components of marijuana, inhibited tumor growth in laboratory animals by modulating key cell-signaling pathways and thus causing direct growth arrest and death of tumor cells. The study also found that cannabinoids inhibited angiogenesis and that cannabinoids were usually well tolerated and did not produce the generalized toxic effects of conventional chemotherapies.

According to neurologist Dr. Ethan Russo, the Guzman study was very important because cancer cells become immortalized and fail to heed normal signals to turn off growth and die on cue. In addition, the other way that tumors grow is by sending out signals to promote angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels. Cannabinoids turn off these signals as well.

Normally, any story that even suggests the possibility of a new treatment for cancer is greeted with headlines about a "cancer cure" - however remote or improbable it might be. However, if marijuana is involved, don't expect any coverage from mainstream media.

News coverage of the Madrid discovery has been virtually nonexistent in this country. The news broke quietly on Feb. 29, 2000 with a story that ran once on the UPI wire about the Nature Medicine article. The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times all ignored the story, even though its newsworthiness would seem indisputable: a benign substance occurring in nature destroys deadly brain tumors.

The previous study which indicated that marijuana could be effective against cancer was conducted in 1974. In that study, researchers at the Medical College of Virginia, who had been funded by the National Institutes of Health to find evidence that marijuana damages the immune system, found instead that THC slowed the growth of three kinds of cancer in mice - lung and breast cancer, and virus-induced leukemia.

The DEA quickly shut down the Virginia study and all further cannabis/tumor research, according to Jack Herer, who reported on the events in his book, "The Emperor Wears No Clothes". In 1976, President Gerald Ford ended all public research on cannabis and granted exclusive research rights to major pharmaceutical companies, who unsuccessfully attempted to develop synthetic forms of THC that would deliver the medical benefits without the "high."

In 1983, the Reagan/Bush Administration attempted to persuade American universities and researchers to destroy all 1966-76 cannabis research work, including compendiums in libraries, reported Herer. He stated, "We know that large amounts of information have since disappeared."

On March 29, 2001, the San Antonio Current printed a story by Raymond Cushing titled, "POT SHRINKS TUMORS; GOVERNMENT KNEW IN '74" which detailed government and media suppression of news about marijuana cancer benefits. Cushing noted in his article that it was hard to believe that the knowledge that cannabis can be used to fight cancer has been suppressed for almost thirty years and aptly concluded his article by saying:

"Millions of people have died horrible deaths and in many cases, families exhausted their savings on dangerous, toxic and expensive drugs. Now we are just beginning to realize that while marijuana has never killed anyone, marijuana prohibition has killed millions."

(NaturalNews) Across the United States, debates about medical marijuana fester in many communities and states. Currently, fourteen states of the fifty in the Union plus Washington, D.C. have legalized marijuana for medical use. Yet in those states, and many others who are considering similar measures, the argument rages on. What is most often ignored in these discussions is the science behind the use of cannabis as a medicine. Yet there is ample scientific evidence proving the efficacy of this natural herb in treating some medical conditions. Just as there is evidence of side effects.

First, the Science

The University of California Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research has done several studies into the efficacy of marijuana for neuropathic use - especially in pain reduction. They have been done using FDA standardized clinical trials with randomized, placebo-controlled procedures. These studies have clearly shown the positive effects of using marijuana as a pain reliever and medicine for patients with such chronic conditions as HIV, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, spinal cord injury, and sleep disorders.1

A recent review in Germany showed that since 2005, there have been 37 controlled studies assessing the safety and efficacy of marijuana (and its compounds). These involved far more subjects than the average study seeking FDA approval for a prescription drug.2

These are just a few, as over 2,500 papers were published on the subject of cannabis in 2009 alone.

Next, the Baseless Debates

Many opponents of medical marijuana claim that there is "little evidence" and call for "more research, more science." These are the more reasonable of the detractors for the medicinal use of marijuana, of course. Yet these reasonable arguments against marijuana as a medicine are pretty hollow given the vast amount of research that's already been done with much more on the way.

Proponents of medical marijuana often ignore the research as well. Despite the common claims to the contrary, there is evidence that marijuana also has negative side effects. Most of these center on the physical effects of smoking it as well as proven cognitive negatives. Admittedly, the effects are no worse (and generally better) than the side effects associated with many prescription drugs and accepted non-prescription drugs such as alcohol or tobacco.3

Most of the arguments for or against the use of medical marijuana seem to center on social rather than science-based concerns. This is rightly so, in some cases, as there are deep social issues involved with marijuana's use (or prohibition). Many communities have benefited from the introduction of medical marijuana, however.4 The negative impacts of marijuana, socially, are nearly always associated with its prohibition rather than its allowance.

When All Is Said and Done

Marijuana is continually being proven to have medical uses. Its prohibition is becoming less and less tenable as negative societal impacts are proving to be more psychologically-based than they are scientific. With 14 of 50 states in the U.S. having medical marijuana laws and with several considering full legalization of it (as is Mexico and as have some European countries), the real motivations behind those who condemn marijuana as a "hard drug" akin to synthetic street drugs such as cocaine are hard to understand.

The truth is, however, until Americans are willing to be completely honest about the issues surrounding marijuana and its use as a medicine, these senseless arguments are likely to continue indefinitely. Both sides of the argument need to concede that the other may have some points. All involved must realize that medical marijuana has enough science-based proof behind it to be considered legitimate and at the same time must acknowledge that there are negatives to the use of marijuana as well.

Medicinal properties of medical marijuana for cancer sufferers

There's major breaking news on medical marijuana: Now the National Cancer Institute has officially recognized the medicinal properties of medical marijuana for cancer sufferers:


A milestone quietly occurred last month, and one the federal government would prefer to ignore. Yet, it could mean a step in the right direction for hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people who use a centuries-old botanical medicine: cannabis, otherwise know as marijuana.

According to the Washington Independent, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) changed its website on March 17th and for the first time listed cannabis as a Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM). At that time, the NCI website read:

"The potential benefits of medicinal Cannabis for people living with cancer include antiemetic effects, appetite stimulation, pain relief, and improved sleep. In the practice of integrative oncology, the health care provider may recommend medicinal Cannabis not only for symptom management but also for its possible direct antitumor effect."

And just in case the issue of medical efficacy was in question, NCI further stated that:

"Cannabis has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years prior to its current status as an illegal substance."

Besides the obvious "It's about time" retort to the inclusion of cannabis in the CAM listing, there is definitely more here to this decades-long story of the struggle between politics and science. If the symptoms of cancer and the side effects from treatment can be ameliorated or fought-off with medical cannabis, wouldn't that be worth significant research investment? And, wouldn't the value of that research increase considerably if cannabis therapeutically benefited people with an array of other medical conditions? What if science showed that cannabis could halt or diminish the growth of tumors?

Unfortunately, despite promising studies on the effects of cannabis on tumor growth and a host of other scientific investigations into the therapeutic benefits of cannabis -- mostly conducted outside of the United States -- we have failed to rise to the occasion. Cannabis used for research in the U.S. is tightly controlled by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the National Institutes on Drug Abuse (NIDA). The research that does occur is narrowly focused by NIDA on the supposed abuse potential of cannabis, bypassing vast areas of efficacy ripe for investigation.

In 2007, DEA Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) Mary Ellen Bittner ruled in a case attempting to expand and diversify the production of research cannabis in the U.S. that such research was "in the public interest." However, DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart ignored her own ALJ's recommendations and denied the petition that would have broken a 40-year old monopoly on federal research cannabis production, housed at the University of Mississippi. The federal monopoly on cannabis cultivation is complemented by a Byzantine approval process that would have made Franz Kafka proud.

With these tactics, the government has held a pretty tight lid on cannabis research over the years -- an obstructionist's approach really. But prioritizing politics over science is a tenuous affair, full of contradictions and hypocrisy.

Take for instance the revisions NCI made to its website not two weeks after it listed cannabis as a Complementary Alternative Medicine. Just to make sure its readers didn't think it was endorsing the use of medical cannabis, NCI reminded us that "The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved the use of Cannabis as a treatment for any medical condition..." However, more importantly, NCI removed reference to a "possible direct antitumor effect." They wouldn't want to give the impression that cannabis should be further researched, would they?

After feeling some heat from mainstream media outlets, NCI offered an explanation for its apparent shiftiness around cannabis. Craftily, NCI distanced itself from the Physician Data Query (PDQ) Editorial Boards, which are responsible for the website content (i.e. the content on cannabis). "PDQ Editorial Boards review current evidence," and "do not make recommendations," said NCI in a written response. "Their work is editorially independent of [NCI]," and "The summary on Cannabis and cannabinoids does not represent a policy statement of NCI or NIH (National Institutes of Health)."

Okay, this is where it gets interesting.

All of the government double-speak aside, the NCI website still states that cannabis has been used medicinally for millennia and that oncologists may recommend it for cancer "symptom management." Pretty bold statements for a website, whether from an editorial department or not. Now, NCI happens to be one of 11 agencies within the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which is under the authority of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The problem is that HHS has consistently maintained that cannabis is a dangerous drug with no medical value. Specifically, HHS has publicly stated that cannabis "has no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States."

The contradictions don't stop there. The same production facility at the University of Mississippi that selectively disburses research cannabis also mails out literally pounds of the dried plant each year to the remaining four patients who qualified for the federal Investigational New Drug program.

The NCI website recognition also comes as a petition to reclassify medical cannabis has nearly reached its 10th anniversary with no response from the federal government. Since the Coalition for Rescheduling Cannabis (CRC) filed its petition in 2002, dozens more studies have been conducted recognizing the therapeutic effects of cannabis, eight more states passed medical marijuana laws (bringing the total to 15), and the country's two largest physician groups -- American Medical Association and American College of Physicians -- have both called for a review of marijuana's status as a Schedule I substance.

Here is the chance for the federal government to come clean, recognize the evidence and reclassify cannabis so that patients in the U.S. can use it without fear of reprisal no matter where they live. Yet, based on historical precedent, the cards are stacked against patients. In 1988, the DEA denied a rescheduling petition despite strong judicial condemnation of marijuana's Schedule I classification. The DEA's own Administrative Law Judge Francis L. Young ruled on the petition, commenting that, "Marijuana in its natural form is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man." Although final determinations on rescheduling petitions are made by DEA, the review process relies heavily on recommendations from HHS, the federal department that oversees NCI.

Another lesser-known contradiction of federal cannabis policies has to do with the THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) pill Marinol. Though ineffective for many medical cannabis patients, Marinol will go off patent this year and a number of companies are vying for generic licenses. Companies are asking the government to allow them to grow cannabis in order to extract the natural form of THC, the primary active chemical in the plant used in the pill. Marinol is currently made with synthetic THC, but it is cheaper to extract the chemical from the plant.

The hypocrisy will soon be too much for even the federal government to bear. The science on cannabis will eventually prevail over politics. It's just not acceptable to hold millions of sick Americans hostage to such a political double standard. It's time for the Obama Administration to recognize the science, act with integrity, and reschedule cannabis.

and the doctors could not believe it. They took him to the hospital and gave
him a CAT scan. They found no cancer lesions in his lungs and said it was
a miracle. I then put an ad in The Northwest Herald offering it free, and
four people's aid they would try it. Slowly one person told another and it
spread. There was a fair amount of people taking it for different kinds of
cancer and several for other things. For instance, a man lost the use of his
immune system and was told he wouldn't be able to work again for three
years, in six months he is now working ? days and feeling better. I know
this is not a cure all. It won't help everyone or all kinds of cancer. I know it
is not a cure for skin cancer and it hasn't had luck with brain tumors.
There is a doctor in Boston, Massachusetts that has developed a vaccine
that is doing great things. This has been successful with prostate, colon,
breast, liver and best of all with lung cancer. Five people have taken it for
lung cancer and all five have been cured once. The immune system controls
the cancer cells in your body. As long as the immune system is healthy, you
don't usually have a cancer problem. When your immune system gets run
down, it loses control of the cancer cells, and they start eating live cells and
this is what they call cancer. This powder made from dandelion root has
something in it that builds up the blood and the immune system.
When the immune system is built up so far, it gets back control of cancer
cells, and they do an about face and start cleaning up the mess they've
made. This is why you must have a fair appetite because your body must
build itself up and be healthy if your immune system is going to be strong.
This will not work for people that have lost their appetite or are on
CHEMO. Doctors try to blast the cancer out of your body with Chemo or
radiation. By doing so, it destroys your immune system and appetite. These
are the most important things your body needs to beat cancer. Operations
also knock the immune system haywire. This is why so many people that
have operations for cancer find that a short time later it has spread
somewhere else.
Many of the worst diseases that have plagued the world have been cured
quite easily. When I was a boy, women dreaded the goiter more than
cancer. A little iodine in the diet cured that. For hundred of years the most
dreaded diseases was leprosy and lockjaw. A doctor found he could
produce penicillin from moldy bread and could cure them and many more
things. How long has moldy bread been around? I'm sure scientists will find
many uses for the powder made from the root of the dandelions besides
cancer. I have already found it builds up the blood so you heal much faster.
To make the powder from the dandelion root you must follow my directions
to the letter. Any changes and it won't work. Dig a handful of dandelion
roots any time of the year, it doesn't matter. Cut the leaves off just below
the crown. DO NOT WASH. Then they must be dried around 100 degrees.
I do it in an incubator with no water. You can also dry them under a heat
light bulb if you raise or lower it so it's 100 degrees. You can also use the
sun or put them in the attic if it's not too hot. It takes about 5 or 6 days in
the incubator. I have not done this all the way under the heat light. When
you break a root and it snaps it is ready to powder. Take an old iron frying
pan and a clean hammer. Take one root at a time and place in the frying pan
and start tapping. Don't hit hard or it will fly all over the place. I put my
hand around the root to keep most of it in the pan. If it sticks to the hammer
and pan, and doesn't crumble in your fingers, it isn't dry enough. Keep it up
until you have enough to start. It takes about 20 minutes to ? hour to
prepare enough for a week. When you get used to it you can go much

You lose too much of the good part in dust. You must do it as I have said or
don't do it at all. I've tried shortcuts, but it seems someone was looking over

not a scientist, so I wouldn't know the correct amount to take on my own.
Now take a little over one half teaspoon once a day at any time and mix it
with water, orange juice, etc.. Do not use in soft drinks, liquor, or anything
hot. When mixed, use it all. Don't let it stand around. Keep the power in a
dry place. After taking it three or four days, you will feel good, but nothing
else. That is because your blood is building up. When you blood is happy,
you're happy. In most cases, this will build your immune system in from
three days to three weeks to the point it takes back control of cancer cells
and thus the cancer stops spreading. In most cases it is going to help. There
is no body feeling as it works. You just feel a little better each week. After
three weeks most of the pain will be gone in your back and you know it's
working if you had pain there like I did. If you have bone cancer in the
spine, it will take three months to work. This is not an overnight cure. It
took a while to get in this condition and it will take a while for your body to
heal. The sooner you start, the quicker you will be over cancer. Young
people heal faster than old people, but it will help at any age. I know
because I'm 80 and have been taking it for over three years.
No cancer has come back and no side effects except when my body has had
enough, it lets me know by getting heart burn. Then I back off some.
Some people get stomach aches when they need less. It also means your
cancer is under control and you don't need as much. You will also find you
probably won't catch a cold while you are taking it full strength.
The biggest enemy for this root is Chemo. The stronger the Chemo, the less
chance the power has to help you as Chemo tears your immune system and
appetite down, two of the most important things you need to cure cancer.
There is only a ten percent chance Chemo will cure you. With no chemo,
your chances are 75 to 80% but you must take it every day. Don't let your
doctor give you that old treat if you turn him down that goes, "If you want
to throw your life away, I can't stop you". Just remember that 90% of the
people that take his advice and take chemo are in the cemetery. Don't blame
the doctor, he is doing his best with what he has to work with or you could
ask for a written guarantee.
I have only mentioned cancers that I know people have had and used this
